For centuries, strange reports of loud sounds occurring in nature have been documented. Explorers Lewis and Clark spoke of the "artillery" of the Rocky Mountains, and further east, New York has its "Seneca Guns", a name borrowed for the strange, booming sands of the North Carolina coast. More recently, strange booms have been likened to "sky quakes", opined as being caused by everything from upper atmospheric storms, to sonic booms caused by aircraft. The Mystery Booms is a site devoted to the accumulation of scientific data about mystery booms, which approaches the subject from a rational, non-sensational perspective. There is no single catch-all explanation for the reports, and hence, our objective is to look at the large quantity of available geological, meteorological, and other data pertaining to the subject, in an effort to study their causes and amass an understanding of the phenomena associated with these noises heard around the world.
